Yang Aneh Dari US Hams Mailing List

Saya ikut beberapa mailling list radio amatir negara lain. Padahal mereka tau, banyak member adalah non-US Hams. Cuek aja.

Garis start kita nggak jauh sama mereka.

OK, I’ll admit I’m new at this but I was just told something that I don’t understand and hopefully someone might be able to explain it to me. I am working with a new radio setup (well, new antenna and radio that has been hooked up but until recently not used much). Anyhow, I thought I understood/was using my antenna tuner properly but I guess not. So what I’m doing is..I hooked the tuner between the transceiver and antenna. I key the transmitter (in SSB) and push/hold the tuner button (it’s an LDG z-100 ATU). Anyhow, I hear the relays click but the green SWR light never lights up..the manual says this means the tuner can’t match the impedance. OK, so here’s where I’m confused… my radio also has a SWR meter built in…if, after the antenna tuner is done I key the transmitter the SWR on the radio says my SWR is 1. So I was told that SSB doesn’t radiate RF so checking the SWR in SSB mode is meaningless. So, if this is the case…how to people transmit
in SSB (i.e. if no RF radiates) and second, if this is incorrect… how are you supposed to check the SWR of the antenna? Thanks…

Jadi betul, tetep semangat dan be progresive!

  2. betul, tetep semangat, jangan minder. termasuk pikiran bahwa setiap orang asing pasti bisa basa londo. padahal belum tentu juga, terutama negara yang basa londo bukan bahasa sehari-hari. pokoke podho ae le mblekuthukan.

  3. tukeran link yukkkk

  4. emmm, nggak deh. soalnya ini lagi kepake utk eksperimen SEO. maap yach.

  5. Dear Om Rivai,

Bukannya semua orag itu “sama”? paling beda warna, dimensi, situasi n sejarah doang.

    Rgds.

  6. Just because your radios SWR meter shows a 1:1 match doesn’t mean the antenna tuner has made a match.
All you are seeing on the radios swr meter is that there is a good match to the antenna tuner.

This means that there is the best match between the two stages for maximum transfer of power to occur at this given frequency.

As far as a Single Side Band signal (SSB) is concerned only the power of the modulation on the side bands is being applied and there is no carrier as in AM or CW.

If you watch your meter when you tune your antenna on CW you can see your signal is making the meter read because the power is leaving the exiter continuously keyed down.

AM will also make the meter read. Why? because there is energy in the carrier even if no audio is applied by the microphone.

So, tune your transmitter into your antenna with exiter set to CW and your key down to tune your antenna tuner. Apply a low rate of power ~10 watts so no circuitry can be harmed in either the radio or the antenna tuner.

Before tuning make sure you have a good ground. Make it as low an inductance as you reaonably can and keep it as short as possible. This return path is very imortant to the performance and life of your tuner.

After you have matched the antenna to the tuner with CW at low power, you can apply higher power but be careful how much power you apply. Like the manual says many of the radios out there can add more power than the antenna tuner can accept.

Know the difference between the rating of power as used in CW and AM and the term of power used in Single side band. Here it is referred to as peak envelope power because the power of the modulation is used and the carrier is reduced or eliminated. You can see an example of this when you have the exiter properly tuned into an antenna or dummy load. The needle on the meter face will only move when you apply some audio such as a whistle or saying hello or test. Once again this is because only the audio is applied and thus you see the needle move since it is the only real amount of mean power making it out of the transmitter.

    • brother John, wonder how can you found this blog. but glad read your comments here. actually my post was intended to encourage my fellow local hams here to go DX. the original mail was obtained from one US ham mailing list. I hope with put this email here can open local friends mind that foreign hams sometimes also had a very simple question to make. and then my local friends should be not under confidence to go DX.

thanks for visit my blog, bro. please do not hesitate if you want to write more.

  7. pak. milis radio amatir yang indonesia apa pak ? saya baru dan pingin belajar tentang.: HT, RIG, SSB, antena nya berikut perangkat dan asesoriesnya. Trimakasih
